Transport, Freight and Logistics

Australia has one of the largest transport and logistics networks in the world, accounting for approximately 8.6 per cent of Australia’s GDP, adding $132 billion to the nation’s economy, and providing employment to more than 1.2 million Australians.

To put the size of the industry into context, more than half a billion tonne kilometres of domestic freight is transported around the nation each year. This is equivalent to over 25,000 tonne kilometres of freight moved annually for each Australian citizen.

In future, the industry will focus on increasing operational efficiency, with The Australian Logistics Council estimating a one per cent productivity increase will boost GDP by $2 billion.
